Whilst anaesthetics developed for humans have been routinely used in a broad range of animal species, the management of pain following surgical procedures performed on animals has received less attention. This paper looks at the increase in clinical use of analgesics in veterinary practice, and comments on pain alleviation in experimental animals.

Good Practice Guide for the Use of Animals in Research, Testing and Teaching

This September 2002 publication is intended to encourage those responsible for such animals to adopt the highest standard of husbandry and animal care. It is intended as a guide for people who are involved in the care and use of animals for the scientific purposes (researching, testing, and teaching) which involve the manipulation of an animal.

Guide to the Preparation of Codes of Ethical Conduct

The purpose of this document is to give guidance to applicants on the preparation of a code of ethical conduct when making their applications. Applicants are requested to consider carefully the relevant provisions under Part 6 of the Animal Welfare Act 1999 and seek independent advice or legal assistance if necessary.
