Detector Dogs - How to become a Handler
The MAF Biosecurity New Zealand Clearance Services undertakes a wide range of Biosecurity functions at New Zealand's ports of entry to prevent the entry of exotic pests, diseases and undesirable species.
MAFBNZ Detector Dogs Handlers work at various worksites such as International Airport and the International Mail Centre.
As the MAFBNZ Clearance Service operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, positions will involve rotational shift work.
The specific skills, knowledge and experience required include:
- An excellent understanding of canine behaviour
- The demonstrated ability to handle and interact well with dogs
- Ability to work in a close team environment
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- A high standard of physical fitness and co-ordination
- Applicants must be highly motivated, have good common sense, initiative and commitment.
Applicants must have:
- Minimum education of 6th Form Certificate or equivalent
- Full New Zealand drivers license and able to drive a manual vehicle
- Permanent residency status or NZ Citizenship to work permanently in New Zealand
Applicants are also subject to:
- Full Police and personal reference checks in order to obtain required security clearances
- Ishihara colour vision test and having a standard of near visual acuity equal to or better than N5 at 40cm.
