Marine Behaviour Change Programme
This campaign, which began in 2005, originated from MAFBNZ's response to the invasive sea squirt Styela clava which had been found in the Hauraki Gulf and Lyttelton.
The response objective was to slow the spread of this marine organism, and in doing so, slow the spread of other potentially harmful marine pests.
The campaign focus is encouraging the owners of moored vessels to regularly clean their boats and ensure their hulls are well coated with antifouling paint.
Initiatives under this campaign include some advertising in specialist boating media and websites, meetings with boat clubs, face to face advisors in marinas, and a laminated water-resistant boatie's guide
(878 KB) to marine biosecurity which covers the impacts pests can have, as well as the importance of good vessel hygiene. As well, MAFBNZ has produced a video guide to cleaning and antifouling and information for the aquaculture industry
(83 KB).
Along with the boat cleaning message, the campaign also draws attention to the role marine users can play in reporting suspect pest organisms to MAFBNZ through the free phone 0800 80 99 66.
Marine Events
Events are chosen for their relevance to the target audience/s. MAFBNZ attends significant national events eg Auckland International Boat Show, Hutchwilco Boat Show, Christchurch Boat Show, Marlborough Boat Show, Southland Boat show.
