Molecular Diagnostics Workshop

1st & 2nd may 2012
NCBID - Wallaceville, 66 Ward St, Upper Hutt

The MAF Biosecurity New Zealand Investigation & Diagnostic Centres and the National Centre for Biosecurity and Infectious Disease – Wallaceville (NCBID) is pleased to be hosting its 2nd 2-day workshop on Molecular Diagnostic to be held at the Wallaceville site on the 1st & 2nd May 2012.

Emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases continue to be a challenge. Progress has been made in their diagnosis by molecular methods such as PCR, reverse transcriptase-PCR, real-time PCR, nucleic acid sequencing, and hybridization microarrays. Their detection and identification has great consequences for various aspect of human, animal or plant health, including diagnosis, treatment and control.

In the current context of global change, characterizing microbial diversity has become crucial, and new tools have been developed to overcome methodological challenges. The impressive advances of sequencing technologies in recent years have enabled a range of new applications and the technical development of current second generation sequencing systems shows no sign of halting.

This workshop aims to bring together people interested in the application of molecular diagnostics in fields such as zoonoses, biosecurity, plant health, conservation, human health, veterinary science and marine diagnostics.

Workshop topics include:

  • New developments and techniques
  • One World, One Health
  • Management of molecular work in the diagnostic laboratory
  • Molecular epidemiology
  • High throughput sequencing and analysis
  • Biosecurity
  • Genetically modified organisms
