Draft Containment Standard for New Organisms held in Zoos

The draft Containment Standard for New Organisms held by Zoos is now available for public consultation and comment.

This Standard has been developed in close collaboration with the Environmental Risk Management Authority (ERMA) and the Zoo and Aquarium Association (ARAZPA).

The draft standard format is different from the current standard in that it is split into two documents - the standard and an accompanying reference document. The standard intends to clearly specify the containment outcomes that must be met. The reference document provides detail about how those outcomes can be met, approval procedures, and outlines actions that MAFBNZ can take. The reference document also includes some specific industry guidelines.

Submissions on these draft documents should be forwarded to MAFBNZ by close of business on 9 April 2010. Depending on the results of consultation, it is anticipated that the new requirements will be in as soon as possible after consultation.
