Proposal to prohibit the sale and use of rodent glueboard traps

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) is seeking feedback from interested parties on policy changes for the sale and use of rodent glueboard traps in New Zealand. We would appreciate any feedback by 31 October 2008.

In 2000, the National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (NAWAC) recommended to the Minister of Agriculture that the importation, sale and use of glueboards be prohibited in New Zealand. In December 2002, MAF released a public discussion document which analysed these recommendations against criteria in the Animal Welfare Act that the Minister needs to take into account before deciding whether to prohibit or restrict a trap. This process then lapsed due to other priorities.

The discussion paper attached outlines MAF’s proposed policy changes for rodent glueboard traps and largely reflects the previous proposal. In light of the time between the last discussion document and now, we want to check that there are no new or outstanding issues to consider before making final recommendations to the Minister of Agriculture.
