MPI Approved Disinfectants for General Transitional Facilities for Uncleared Goods

Background

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) has selected disinfectants, for use in MPI approved Transitional Facilities that have shown effectiveness for use in respect to all of the following orders:

• Foot and mouth disease
• Swine vesicular disease
• Diseases of poultry
• General orders

The approved dilution rate is the lowest dilution rate for each of these orders to ensure that the disinfectant will have a broad spectrum effect against pathogens that may be associated with imported refuse and goods.

Products manufactured in New Zealand with similar trade names to the disinfectants listed are not MPI approved disinfectants unless specifically listed.

Anybody wishing to get a chemical onto the approved Biosecurity Disinfectants list is to send MPI the relevant information such as labels, data sheets, MSDS, approvals in other countries, Food Safety or Asurequality approvals. Send the information to: standards@MPI.govt.nz

Once the relevant information is obtained the data will be assessed for technical suitability against the orders stated above.

There may be a charge to the applicant depending on the time taken at $100/hr inclusive of GST to process.

NOTE: The list has been updated; anybody using a compound from the December  2011 list may finish stock on hand prior to moving to another on the current list.

Guidelines for use

Users are reminded that many of the products listed will contain hazardous chemicals and the provisions of the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996 may apply. This approval is not a maintenance compound approval for facilities processing products or material for animal or human consumption under other legislation such as the Animal Product Act or Food Act.

Use all disinfectants according to the manufacturer’s health and safety recommendations on the label and/or the safety datasheet. Wear the personal protective equipment. Spraying disinfectants results in whole body exposure. Therefore use the personal and respiratory protective equipment recommended by the supplier. Avoid exposing unprotected people to disinfectant spray.

Dilution rate

Approved dilution rates expressed as parts water to one part disinfectant.

All other disinfectants are measured as Number of Parts Water To One Part Disinfectant
