Background
These disinfectants have been tested in the United Kingdom and approved by the Minister or Agriculture, Fisheries and Food for the purposes of the Diseases of Animals (Approved Disinfectants) Order 1978.
MAF in New Zealand has selected disinfectants from the MAFF list that have shown effectiveness for use in respect to all of the following orders:
- Foot and mouth disease
- Swine vesicular disease
- Diseases of poultry
- General orders
The approved dilution rate is the lowest dilution rate for each of these orders to ensure that the disinfectant will have a broad spectrum effect against pathogens that may be associated with imported refuse and goods.
Products manufactured in New Zealand with similar trade names to the disinfectants listed above are not MAF approved disinfectants unless specifically listed.
Guidelines for use
Users are reminded that many of the products listed will contain hazardous chemicals and the provisions of the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996 may apply.
Those marked with an asterisk (*) are classified as toxic/very toxic or contain compounds that may cause asthma and extra care is needed in the way these are used.
Use all disinfectants according to the manufacturer’s health and safety recommendations on the label and/or the safety datasheet. Wear the personal protective equipment. Spraying disinfectants results in whole body exposure. Therefore use the personal and respiratory protective equipment recommended by the supplier. Avoid exposing unprotected people to disinfectant spray.
Dilution rate
Approved dilution rates expressed as parts water to one part disinfectant.
