Forestry Import Health Standards & Application

Forest produce broadly falls into two categories:


Propagable produce consists of seeds for sowing, plants or cuttings; while non-propagable produce includes a variety of material most often used in building or packaging.

Forest Produce Import Health Standards

The requirements for the import into New Zealand of non-viable forest produce are provided in eight separate import health standards issued under the Biosecurity Act.

Pest Free Areas and Host Lists for Pests of Concern

A number of pests are of significant concern to New Zealand forests. For some of these pests areas have been approved that, for purposes of phytosanitary declarations, can be considered pest free.

Included are lists of plant species considered to be hosts of the pest.

The areas listed are considered by MAF to qualify for pest free area status for the list pest as prescribed by the International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPM) 4: Requirements for the Establishment of Pest Free Areas (offsite link to www.ippc.int).
