Steps for Importing Seeds into New Zealand

Seeds may host pests or diseases which could devastate our agricultural economy or environment. Seeds may also be weed plants and therefore pests themselves. Thousands of species of seeds have been assessed as safe and are listed in a database of plant species (Plants Biosecurity Index(offsite link to www1.maf.govt.nz)). These seeds may be imported provided that they meet the conditions listed in the import health standard. All seeds must be declared on arrival and inspection is required. The importation of some species of seed is regulated under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES(offsite link to www.ci)) and must be accompanied by a valid CITES export permit issued by the appropriate management authority in the country of export.
