Restricted Items
Restrictions apply to all goods entering New Zealand borders that are classified as risk goods.
If you wish to import something into New Zealand, you will need to consult the appropriate Import Health Standard. See information about importing containers and vehicles.
Quarantine risk items include:
- Meat and meat products
- Eggs and egg products
- Fresh produce
- Fresh fruit
- Straw and straw products
- Wooden items and curios
- Dairy products
- Honey and bee products
- Animal products such as wool, hides, hunting trophies, even snail shells
- Soil (including dirty shoes)
- Seeds and plants or plant material-( See Restricted Plant products )
- Second-hand saddlery
- Animal remedies
- Some Chinese medicines
- Used vehicles
- Farm machinery
- Equipment used with animals or soil
- Contaminated containers
- Sports and camping equipment
- Ivory, turtle shell artefacts, clam shells, coral and products made from snakeskin or whalebone which may be covered by the CITES
