Birds
New Zealand does NOT allow pet birds from any country to be imported.
No pet birds of any species from any country have been imported into New Zealand since 1997. Imports were suspended following an avian disease outbreak, and remain in effect due to the risks associated with live bird imports.
MPI plans to develop an import risk analysis for parrots. MPI will first need to review all the potential risks associated with importing parrots and the possible ways of managing these risks. An Import Health Standard can then be developed. This process involves extensive research and consultation and can take a few years to complete.
