Plant Exports: Access to New Markets

The role of the Export group (plants) is to assist New Zealand exporters to obtain access to markets by ascertaining the phytosanitary requirements of importing countries and negotiating technically justified changes to these requirements.

In many cases a commodity may be prohibited entry to a country because a Pest Risk Analysis has not been conducted, or for other phytosanitary reasons. In such cases, Biosecurity New Zealand can assist exporters by providing technical data to the importing country and working to develop technically justified phytosanitary requirements for the commodity.  Market access projects are carried out on a cost recovery basis.

Our most significant examples of discussion of technical requirements for the importation of New Zealand plants have been in response to import risk analysis documents by Australia, notably for apples and stone fruit. Copies of these submissions are available below:

On 23 June 2004 New Zealand provided comment on the Australian Revised Draft Import Risk Analysis for Apples from New Zealand. View a full copy of New Zealand's comments (pdf) (357 Kb)

On 30 March 2006 New Zealand provided comment on the Australian reissued Revised Draft Import Risk Analysis for Apples from New Zealand. View a full copy of New Zealand's comments(pdf) (883 Kb)
