Didymo confirmed in Waimakariri River
10 February 2010
Didymo (Didymosphenia geminata) has been confirmed in the Waimakariri River, MAF Biosecurity New Zealand (MAFBNZ) announced today.
The confirmation of didymo in the Waimakariri River was a result of regular sampling that occurs throughout the country. While there were no visible signs of growth at any of the sites tested, all were positive for didymo cells.
"The find is very disappointing and significant as the Waimakariri is a popular river for many recreational activities in the region. This is once again a timely reminder for the need for freshwater users to always 'Check, Clean, Dry' when moving between waterways to slow the spread of didymo and other freshwater pests," said MAFBNZ South Island Operations Manager, Jeff Donaldson.
"Two major events are planned around the Waimakariri River this weekend, the Coast to Coast and the Jet Boat Expo and participants will need to ensure they Check Clean Dry before entering another waterway."
MAFBNZ will have an information stand at the Jet Boat Expo, while Department of Conservation (DOC) staff will operate a cleaning station for competitors finishing the kayaking leg of the Coast to Coast. Organisers of the Coast to Coast have had measures in place for some time to remind competitors to Check, Clean, Dry and have been informed of the didymo find in the Waimakariri.
"Didymo is a microscopic organism which often exists in waterways for a long time without being visible to the naked eye. The South Island is currently a Didymo Controlled Area, meaning freshwater equipment used in the South Island needs to be cleaned properly before going to the North Island.
"Check, Clean, Dry is still the best way to prevent the spread of didymo and other freshwater pests," said Mr Donaldson.
