Surveillance, Risk, Response & Management

Pests and Diseases: Early detection and management

New Zealand has strong biosecurity measures designed to keep pests and diseases out of New Zealand.

However, no matter how good our biosecurity measures at the border are, the risk of pests and diseases entering New Zealand is never non-existent.

What can we do to manage the small amount of left-over risk, and to ensure that we're ready, should a pest or disease incursion occur?

Biosecurity Surveillance:
Surveillance means watching out for pests and diseases. Everyone can help by being watchful. Find out more about what MAF Biosecurity New Zealand does in the way of Biosecurity Surveillance, and how you can help.

Response and Pest Management:
What happens if a pest or disease is found in New Zealand? Find out about how MAF Biosecurity New Zealand can respond to new pests or diseases, and how long-term management of established pests and diseases is handled.

Risk Analysis is a formalised approach for the identification, assessment, management and communication of risk. It is now an accepted basis for establishing international trading standards and for trade negotiations involving dispute, where safety aspects of animal and plant products are concerned.

New Zealand is one of the countries leading the way in establishing risk analysis procedures internationally.

Surveillance, Response and Pest Management are part of the Post Border directorate of MAFBNZ. Post Border directorate leads and co-ordinates the management of residual risks for pests and diseases after the border biosecurity processes are completed. The Post Border Directorate has the overall objective of reducing impact from harmful organisms, and providing credible assurances for trade.
