Future of Pest Management Project Update June 2009
June 2009
The project is getting underway, as follows:
- The two reports on the 'Future of Pest Management' were formally released in October 2008
- Initial discussions within government and with key stakeholders have been held. The focus of discussion was on testing the issues and options raised across the two reports and identifying any gaps and additional ideas. Equivalent discussions with Maori will begin shortly.
- A specific initial piece of work on high level outcomes, roles and accountabilities has been undertaken at the request of the Biosecurity Central Regional Government Forum. The result has been considered by a small group of regional and central government chief executives and the project steering group, and will now be used to guide work within the project.
The key next step is to set up the project work streams.
There will be two further opportunities to provide input to the strategy development process, either to be directly involved in the project work groups, or through formal consultation once initial proposals are developed.
- Involvement in work groups
Within the project plan seven indicative work streams have been identified:
1. Clarifying outcomes and effective future state, strategic action plan development and integration
2. Roles and responsibilities
3. Crown obligations as a landowner
4. Legislative review
5. Physical control tools
6. Collective action
7. Change programme and implementation plan developmentFor each work stream a small 'drafting' team will be established to develop proposals, with a wider working group, made up of invited representatives from key stakeholder organisations, being established to test and shape these proposals and provide feedback / recommendations.
- Formal consultation - A draft action plan will be released for public consultation in February 2010. Interested parties will have three months to submit written responses which will then be taken into consideration in the preparation of the final plan.
Project updates will be published regularly.
