Action underway against marine pest in Lyttelton Port

Body:

MAF Biosecurity New Zealand (MAFBNZ) is about to test its armoury of marine pest treatment weapons against the introduced Mediterranean fanworm which was recently detected in Lyttelton Port of Christchurch.

The fanworm, an unwanted marine organism with the potential to spread and smother other marine species, was found as part of MAFBNZ’s routine pest surveillance in Lyttelton.

Divers are expected to begin work in the port sometime next week (from 25 August), treating the known populations of the fanworm, while at the same time testing the effectiveness of existing detection and treatment methods for marine pests.

The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) is undertaking the work for MAFBNZ and will coordinate a team of divers to undertake thorough searches of the areas of the port known to be infested with the worm and manually remove any specimens they find.

Senior Marine Advisor Dr Peter Stratford says this two-pronged ‘search and remove’ approach has been reviewed and endorsed by an international group of experts including scientists with experience around similar organisms and treatment techniques.

NAWAC Annual Report Released

Body:

The National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (NAWAC) issued its 2007 Annual Report today.

Discussions on the key indicators for assessing animal welfare and the development of Codes of Welfare were the main focus of NAWAC’s work in 2007.

The development of a Code of Welfare for the commercial slaughter of animals involved a detailed examination of the available research, careful attention to the details of law and consultation with affected partners.

“Completing the code required, resolving a number of difficult issues through careful examination of the available research, attention to the requirements of the law and consultation with affected parties,” says Dr. Peter O’Hara, Chairman of NAWAC.

NAWAC’s discussions on key indicators for assessing animal welfare resulted in a commitment, as far is possible, to write minimum standards as statements of welfare outcomes to be achieved from the animal’s perspective rather than as prescriptions of facilities e.g. the size of cages.

One Farmer, three farms, 445 sheep euthanased

Body:

Otago farmer John Dempster was today sentenced in the Dunedin
District Court for failing to maintain the welfare needs of his
sheep. He was fined $15 000, of which $5000 is to be paid to the
Otago SPCA, he was also ordered to pay $15 773.95 in costs and
disqualified from owning, exercising or commercial farming of sheep
for a minimum period of 10 years.

Mr Dempster had sheep on three separate properties,
“Willowbrook”, “Thornhill” and “Hillhead”.

A MAF Enforcement Group Animal Welfare Investigator first
assessed the sheep on the 16th June 2006 after a
complaint from a member of the public had been received.

The initial assessment of the home property “Willowbrook”
revealed sheep in a malnourished state, with evidence of deaths. The
property was run down, with run-out pasture and internal fences not
stock proof.

Subsequent assessment of the sheep on the other two properties by
Enforcement Group personnel and veterinarians found more stock in
poor condition and the properties in a similar state.

Body:

MAF Biosecurity New Zealand (MAFBNZ) has established a new South Island Controlled Area for the varroa bee mite.

The Controlled Area notice imposed on 13 May 2008 under Section 131 of the Biosecurity Act 1993 will be revoked and replaced with a new South Island Controlled Area notice taking effect at 4pm on Friday 1st August 2008.

"This decision has been informed by the input of individual beekeepers, industry representatives and the results from the autumn varroa surveillance and the exotic bee disease surveillance programme," said MAFBNZ Incursion Response Manager, Richard Norman.

Letters have been sent to all registered South Island beekeepers advising them of the change. The Controlled Area Notice and map was published in the New Zealand Gazette and the public notice sections of the Nelson Mail, The Press, and the Otago Daily Times on Thursday 31st July 2008. Information is also available on the MAFBNZ website www.biosecurity.govt.nz. Beekeepers directly affected by the new South Island Controlled Area are being contacted individually.
