Plant Export Certification Standards

Plant and Forest Export Certification Standards

Export Phytosanitary Standards are quarantine requirements set out by importing countries which must be met before they will accept forest produce.

They include details on such items as:

  • Sawn Timber
  • Preservatives for Treating Timber
  • Low Risk Wooden Articles
  • Board Products
  • Preservative Treatments for Board Products
  • Logs
  • Wood Chips
  • Wood Packaging
  • General Conditions and Treatments

While wood packaging and dunnage is mentioned in some standards, a separate international standard called ISPM 15 - Wood Packaging Material Certification Scheme is now in effect for some countries. Phytosanitary standards outline each country's specific requirements before it will accept forest product.

The Forest Product Export Committee Template Document Link to Word document (561 KB) has been developed by the Forest Products Export Committee in consultation with Biosecurity New Zealand. This document has been designed to assist forestry organisations in developing their systems to meet the requirements of the revised export certification standards. The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry does not guarantee that reliance on this document will result in an approval to undertake export certification activities. The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry does not accept responsibility for any losses associated with reliance by forestry organisations on this document.

Wood Packaging

There is an international standard for wood packaging material, including dunnage. This is known as ISPM 15. Most goods exported with wood packaging will probably have to comply with this standard. You can view a list of manufacturers Link to PDF document (64 KB) registered to produce ISPM compliant packaging.
