Lockwood Smith was New Zealand's Minister for International Trade in 1999. He has previously served as Minister of Education, Minister of Agriculture and Minister of Forestry. Prior to entering politics in 1984, Dr Smith worked for the New Zealand Dairy Board as its area marketing manager for Central and South East Asia. Dr Smith is New Zealand's leading breeder of Belguim Blue cattle and manages his family's 330 ha property at Matakohe.

Alex Thiermann is the current chairman of the World Trade Organization's Committee on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures (the SPS committee), and is vice-president of the Code Commission of the world organisation for animal health (the Office International des Epizooties or OIE). Since 1996 Dr Thiermann has served as Senior Trade Coordinator, International Services, for APHIS (the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service of the US Department of Agriculture), and has responsibility for Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Russia and the former Soviet Republics.

Malcolm Bailey was president of Federated Farmers of New Zealand from 1996 to 1999. Prior to 1996, Mr Bailey was the Chairman of the National Dairy Section and the Manawatu/Rangitikei Dairy Section, and the Federated Farmers representative on the Possum/Bovine TB Control National Science Strategy Committee. Mr Bailey has also served with the Ministry of Works Water and Soil Division, and the Reserve Bank in the Economics Department.

Brian Milne is the Chief Executive of the New Zealand Pork Industry Board. Over the past 35 years he has worked with a number of agribusiness organisations involved in horticulture exporting, agricultural chemicals and animal remedies.

Joan Arnoldi is the Associate Administrator for the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), and also serves as the Chief Veterinary Officer, and delegate to the Office International Des Epizooties and to the Region of the Americas Commission. With in the USDA, Dr Arnoldi has served as Deputy Administrator for Veterinary Services, and the Director of the National Veterinary Services Laboratories, and was the first Deputy Administrator for Regulatory Enforcement and Animal Care.

Norman Willis is the Executive Director of the National Centre for Foreign Animal Disease, Canada, and Special Advisor to the President of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Dr Willis was elected to a three year term as President of the International Committee of the Office International des Epizooties (OIE) in 1997. Since joining Agriculture Canada in 1965 Dr Willis has worked as Director General of the Health of Animals Laboratory, Director General of the Health of Animals Directorate, and Director General of the Animal and Plant Health Directorate

Oliver Sutherland spent more than 20 years as a research scientist and science manager with Entomology and Plant Protection Divisions of DSIR. In 1992 he joined Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research as General Manager, Weeds and Pests group, and currently manages the Lincoln Region of the company and research on biosecurity and pest management. Dr Sutherland is also Deputy Chair of the recently-formed Environmental Management Risk Authority.
