Proposal to regulate the sale and use of specified leg hold traps

27 April 2007

Dear Stakeholder

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) is seeking feedback from interested parties on policy changes for the sale and use of leg hold traps in New Zealand and seeks any further feedback on the proposals. We would appreciate any feedback by Friday 8 June 2007.

In December 2002, MAF released a public discussion document which analysed the National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee's (NAWAC's) recommendations on leg hold traps against criteria in the Animal Welfare Act that the Minister needs to take into account before deciding whether to prohibit or restrict a trap. The discussion paper attached outlines MAF's proposed policy changes for leg hold traps and largely reflects the previous proposal. In light of the time between the last discussion document and now (given our inability to progress the work sooner, for which we apologise) we want to check that there are no new or outstanding issues to consider before making recommendations to the Minister of Agriculture.

Information on making a submission and the key questions MAF seeks comment on appear in section 5 of the discussion paper on page 14. Electronic copies of the discussion paper are available on the MAF website at:
