The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is launching a new tool to help staff at meat processing plants recognise and respond to an incursion of foot and mouth disease in stock, as part of its preparedness for risk organisms.
MAF Biosecurity New Zealand (MAFBNZ) has extended its contract with a French manufacturer of Foot and Mouth (FMD) disease antigen and vaccine.
On Tuesday 20th of April 2010 the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, notified the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) of an outbreak of foot and mouth disease (FMD) in Miyazaki, western Japan.

New Zealand and European Union negotiators have agreed a proposal that would have significant economic benefits should New Zealand ever have a serious animal health disease such as Foot and Mouth (FMD).
The Agriculture and Forestry Ministry will lead a major exercise in April simulating an outbreak of foot and mouth disease, Biosecurity Minister Jim Sutton said today.

By mid-afternoon today, MAF officials had contacted 30 Waiheke Island farmers, but were still unable to reach the owners of nine small farms. Any Waiheke farmers who have not spoken to MAF officials are asked to contact MAF on 0800 80 99 66.
