Animal Welfare
Outdoor pig farming is a farming system which is perceived to provide higher animal welfare for the sow, when compared with indoor systems. However comparisons of farrowing performance data between conventional indoor pens with farrowing crates and outdoor (as well as loose indoor) farrowing systems, consistently highlight higher level of piglet deaths with outdoor or loose systems. While it is easy to characterise ‘systems’ as traditional indoor versus outdoor, there can also be as much difference within systems as between them.
