Scampi (Metanephrops challengeri) form burrows in the seabed, and photographic surveys counting burrows are used to estimate stock abundance. Other species also form burrows, and this report reviews available data from the Chatham Rise to identify potential burrow formers, and evaluate whether these burrows were likely to be confused with those of scampi. None of the species recorded of appropriate size to be confused with scampi are actually known to generate burrows.
