Sea container import health standard tool

This tool summarises the sea container import health standard (IHS) requirements. It's meant to be a quick reference guide for importers. Make sure you check the individual IHSs for the cargo in the container.

When is the container shipping?

Notify MPI

If you intend to ship sensitive cargo, you must notify MPI before you export. MPI will then decide if treatment will damage the cargo.

Check the list of goods MPI considers to be sensitive to treatment

Treatment requirements

Your container must be clean and free of pests and biosecurity contamination.

MPI may inspect the container and cargo instead of treating it.

Treatment requirements

Your container must be clean and free of pests and biosecurity contamination.

If your cargo has been treated or managed to meet the Vehicle, Machinery, and Parts Import Health Standard (VMP IHS), then there are no further requirements for brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB) for the container.

If your cargo doesn't require treatment under the VMP IHS, then you will still need to treat the container.

Your container must:

  • be clean and free of pests and biosecurity contamination
  • be treated before arrival in New Zealand for brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB) as outlined in MPI-ABTRT by an approved offshore treatment provider
  • meet post-treatment requirements (see section 2.3 of the IHS)
  • have a treatment certificate.
