Foot-and-mouth disease is not in NZ
New Zealand has never had an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and is officially recognised as FMD-free.
- MPI statement of absence of FMD from New Zealand [PDF, 297 KB]
- OIE (World Organisation for Animal Health) official disease status for FMD
Because of our isolation and strict border controls, there is a low risk of an outbreak of FMD in New Zealand.
Who to contact
If you think you've seen a case of FMD, call your local vet immediately – they will contact MPI's pest and disease hotline. If a vet isn't available, contact our hotline directly on 0800 80 99 66.
If you have questions about FMD, email firstname.lastname@example.org
